How do we come to know our multiple [layered] selves? What happens to that question when you've spent years performing some of these selves for a wage? These questions animate a new performance by Sofia Córdova, AY NO SE, asking questions of the layers and limits of the self. As part of the Character Development exhibition, Córdova will stage a multi-screen, multi-sound performance of “ideas that cul-de-sac, then eddy, swirl up and swirl down, tornado, evanescent hurricane." Through video, sound, and text, she and a constellation of accomplices will trouble our notions of self and other.

Córdova travels through, admires, contradicts, and mostly circumvents the technologies we've invented for self-knowledge—from psychoanalysis and philosophy to astrology and pedagogy. But rather than simply asking whether these methods work, she morphs into the question itself, pointing to the lamentable bargain of selfhood-as-labor while scouting alternate trails, where we come to know ourselves through our relationships with others, and where "the big quest" yields more bounty when undertaken together. There will also be thinking, and agonizing, about what work is when the work is art.

Sofía V. Córdova is one half of the music duo and experimental sound outfit XUXA SANTAMARIA. Her work has been exhibited and performed internationally at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tufts University Galleries, SFMOMA, the Arizona State University Museum, the Vincent Price Art Museum, the Wattis Institute (USA), as well as the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Puerto Rico) and MEWO Kunsthalle (Germany). She has participated in residencies at Eyebeam, Headlands Center for the Arts, Mills College Art Museum, and the ASU Art Museum and composed and choreographed performances for the SF Arts Commission, Merce Cunningham Trust, and Soundwave Biennial. Her work has been featured on the cover of Artforum and within Art in America and Aperture magazines. She is a recipient of a Fundación Ama Amoedo Grant, and Artadia, Trellis Fund, and Creative Capital Awards. Córdova lives and works between Caguas, Puerto Rico, and Oakland, California.
